`The origin of Taepyeongmu(太平舞) was uncertain in records. However, it is generally believed to have derived from Palgwanhoe (the Festival of Eight Vows). Palgwanhoe is a Buddhist and state rite honoring the Celestial King and five famous mountains and rivers in the Goryeo Period. There is a presumption that a symbolized king or god dance and sing songs, praying for national peace and prosperity as a part of Palgwanhoe. Maybe, the very rite is evolved into Taepyeongmu. Today, Kang, Sun-Young`s Taepyeongmu is the most performed dance in various kinds of Taepyeongmu. It is the dance into which the Kyeonggi shamanic dances are transformed by its inventor(Han, Sung-Joon). It expresses that king and queen dance, wishing for peace and prosperity of their state. The costumes of Taepyeongmu were divided by the sex of dancer. The male dancer wore a court dress for the man and the female dancer did a court dress for the woman. But Kang, sun-Young dances Taepyeongmu, wearing Tang`ui (a shorter top worn by queens and crown princesses or the wives of high-ranking court officials on informal occasions) as a inner wear and Wonsam (a topcoat won by women in the royal family and high-ranking court ladies and noblewomen during the Choson Kingdom) as a outer wear. She has Hansam in each of her hands. Also her hair is decorated with big headdress. She names her dance for Taepyeongmu and tries to sublimate sadness about losing the nation into dance. The beat of the accompaniment is derived from Chinsoe-choom danced to the Chinsoe rhythm of the Dohdang shamanic rite in Kyeonggi Province, and is composed by the rhythm of Nak`gung, Teoberlim Tosalp`uri, etc. The movement of Taepyeongmu is based on the shaking off of Changsam like in the Monk`s dance, the motion of the Kyeonggi shamanic dance, and the crane dance. Above all, the footwork is the most important technique of Taepyeongmu. Taepyeongmu`s movement is characterized by delicacy and elegance. Moderation is contained in each movement. Especially, its footwork is very various. Its uniique flavor is in the movement of stamping a dancer`s foot. Taepyeongmu is the most skillful footwork dance in the Korean traditional dances. Along with the Monk`s dance, or Salp`uri, it intrinsically has the Korean beauty of movement-within-quiescence, which is the quintessence of beauty that Korean dance has.
