본 연구는 부산시 소재 4개 대학의 대학생들을 대상으로 정치의식과 정치참여 행태를 분석하였다. 분석을 통하여 기존의 연구들과 유사한, 이미 알려진 결과를 얻었을 뿐만 아니라, 비교적 새로운 점들도 발견하였다. 기존의 연구들에서도 나타났듯이 대학생 다수의 정치성향은 중도좌파쪽에 가깝다는 확인할 수 있었다. 그러나 자가평가(self-placement)의 결과와는 달리, ‘국가보안법폐지,’ 대북인도적 지원’과 관련한 질문에서는 보수적인 것으로, 반면에 ‘부자증세,’ 재벌해체’의 질문에서는 진보적인 것으로 나타났다. 정치의식과 관련하여 대학생들은 전체적으로 보아 정치적 관심이 매우 높은 것은 아니었지만, 전혀 무관심한 것은 아니었다. 그들의 정치적 관심은 신문 기사를 일거나 TV 뉴스를 시청하는 것으로도 나타났지만, 그보다는 타인과 대화하거나 토론하는 것에서 많이 나타났다. 정치참여와 관련하여서는 투표와 같은 전통적인 정치참여가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 그 이유는 대학생들의 정치에 관한 불신은 그렇게 크지 않으나 정치적 효능감이 낮다는 것이었다. 대학생들과 같은 청년 유권자들이 정치과정에 참여할 수 있는 기회가 부족하고, 청년들의 관심과 효용을 제고할 수있는 정책, 공약 등이 계속해서 부재하다면 한국 정치는 ‘청년 없는 중장년의 정치’가 될 수밖에 없을 것이다.

This paper is on the study of the political consciousness and political participation of the college students in Busan. The paper has found out some similarities with the results of the pre-existing studies, a few facts already known, and also some new aspects. The political orientation of a large proportion of the students is close to the center-left position as the existing studies have already shown. However, the ideological position about political issues and policies is significantly different from the result of Conservative -Progressive(or Right-Left) self-placement. The political interest of the students is, in general, not so high, but they may not be regarded as politically indifferent. Their political interest appears in reading newspapers and in watching TV news programs. But the best way in which the political interest is appeared is dialogues and discussions with another students as a daily routine. As the political participation as concerned, the traditional participation type like voting turns out to be very low. One of the reasons for the low participation is not a strong sens of political mistrust, but the relative lack among them of a sense of a civic obligation to vote. This weak sense of citizen duty has no doubt to do with the fact that they feel the political efficacy is apparently very low. If we, elder generation, don`t provide young adults with incentives to vote and sufficient opportunities to participate, our politics will be heading toward a politics “of older people, by older people, and for older people.”
