이 글은 생명윤리의 영역에서 진행되고 있는 내러티브 윤리 담론을 검토하면서, 이것을 예술의 도덕적 가치에 대한 미학적 논의와 연결한다. 먼저 이 글은 힐다 넬슨(Hilde Nelson)의 논의를 토대로 하여 내러티브 윤리 담론을 네 가지 접근법으로 나누어 살펴보고, 그 중에서 특히 내러티브 읽기 접근법에 집중하여 그 담론을 비판적으로 고찰한다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 이 글은 문학작품 속 내러티브를 통한 도덕적 능력의 함양 가능성에 대한 반론들을 검토하고 그것들에 대응하는 논증을 제시한다. 또한 이 글은 내러티브 윤리 전반에 걸쳐 문제로 제기되는 내러티브의 오류 가능성 문제를 극복할 수 있는 하나의 방안으로서 내러티브 공동체에 주목하고, 이러한 내러티브 공동체가 예술작품 경험에 적용될 수 있는 방안을 모색한다. 이러한 논의는 예술작품의 도덕적 가치와 작품 경험의 의미에 대한 미학적 논의에 의미 있는 통찰을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

This essay aims to apply the insights from narrative bioethics to aesthetic discussions of the moral value of artworks and experiences of art. It first explores diverse narrative approaches to ethics, which have been presented as alternative models of morality to the traditional “theoretical-juridical model.” Based on Hilde Nelson`s work in the realm of bioethics, I divide the discourse of narrative ethics into four categories and examine each of them, with a focus on the category of narrative-reading. While doing so, I examine a few possible objections to the possibility of moral cultivation through reading works of literature, and provide an argument in defense of the possibility. Also, I attend to the importance of narrative communities, which can contribute to minimizing the inherent problem of narrative ethics in general, that is, the problem of false narratives. In the realm of aesthetics, the moral value of narratives in works of literature has been thought to consist mainly of the improvement of readers` moral sensitivity and their ability to make sound moral judgments. However, the consideration of diverse aspects of narrative ethics in this essay shows that the narratives in literature can contribute to many more aspects of our moral lives, and thus their moral values are manifold. Also, the consideration of narrative communities suggests the possibility and significance of art experiences ― the experiences of reading literature in particular ― that is beyond the personal and private dimension.
