Constructed wetland for wastewater remediation is an environment friendly technology. Constructed wetlands are relatively inexpensive to construct and operate, and easy to maintain. This technology is effective, reliable and ecologically sound for wastewater treatment. In present study an experimental pilot scale wetland was constructed by using biochar as media. Horizontal wetland beds were prepared using gravels, biochar and cultivated with Canna species. These beds were saturated with wastewater with a retention time of 5 days. Performance parameters were assessed by estimating reduction of SS, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand(COD), total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP) between controlled and experimental wetland beds. The wetland with biochar demonstrated a good removal rate of 99% turbidity, 96.8% TN, 68.9% TP and 86.25% COD as compared to the gravel media, during the 5 days of operation. Biochar media can be used for practical application in constructed wetlands and can benefit to develop economical and efficient wastewater treatment facilities.
