본고에서는 야담 서사에 구현된 운명 대응방식과 그 의미를 고찰해 보고자 했다. 특히 운명에 대한 지향과 대응방식이 다소 다른 『어우야담(於于野談)』과 『청구야담(靑邱野談)』의 대비를 통해 운명에 대한 관점과 수용 방식을 살펴보고 그 의미를 해명하고자 했다. 『어우야담』의 운명담은 운명을 부정하거나 적극적으로 극복하기보다는 운명을 자각하고 수용함으로써 정서적 평형과 감정의 해방을 추구하는 경향이 있다는 것을 수록된 이야기의 성향과 편저자의 평어를 통해 알 수 있다. 『청구야담』에서는 운명을 바꾸기 위해서 명당을 선점하거나 점복을 이용하는 등의 운명을 극복하고 경영하기 시작하는 사람들의 이야기가 등장한다. 여기에서 운명에 대한 대응방식으로 욕망이 추구되고, 욕망은 예정된 운명을 극복하고 변화시켜가는 기제로 작용되고 있다. 『어우야담』에서는 예정된 운명의 모습과 그 담담한 수용을 볼 수 있고, 『청구야담』에서는 운명에 대한 보다 적극적 대응방식으로 운명과 욕망이 합주되기 시작한 모습을 발견할 수 있다. 두 야담의 운명에 대한 대응방식을 통해 야담에서의 운명인식의 변화를 미력하나마 감지할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to study the ways of adaptation to destiny as described in Yadam(野談) narrations and the meanings of them. Disposition of narration and the comments of editor of 『Eowoo Yadam(於于野談)』 implies that it views destiny as something to be understood and accepted, rather than something to be denied or actively overcome, pursuing the parallelism and liberation of emotions. 『CheongguYadam(靑邱野談)』 depicts stories of people, who overcomes and manages their destiny through various methods, such as relying on divination or preoccupying a propitious site to change the destiny. In the narration, desire is pursued as a ways of adapting to destiny and functions as a means of overcoming and changing the designated destiny. From the ways of acceptation to destiny in the two Yadams studied, the subtle change of perception on destiny in Yadam could be revealed.
