본 연구는 명칭 자체가 이미 부정적인 의미를 담고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 또 그 특성이 다양해진 노령인구에 게 무차별적으로 사용되는 기존의 명칭 즉 ‘노인’이라는 명칭 사용에 대한 제고의 기회를 삼고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 122편의 국내외 문헌의 분석을 통해 노령인구, 즉 60세 이상의 인구에 대한 다양한 대안적 명칭의 사용을 고찰하고, 이들 다양한 명칭들을 사용한 설문지의 구성을 통해 250명의 대학생들을 대상으로 60 세 이상 인구의 명칭이 그들에 대한 평가적 태도에 영향을 미치는가를 실증적으로 조사하였다. 그 결과, 문헌분석을 통해 “노인”, “노년층”, “성숙인”, “시니어”, “실버세대”, “어르신”, “G세대” 등의 대안 명칭이 확인 되었고, 이들 각각의 명칭 사용에 따라 60세 이상 인구에 대한 평가적 태도에도 차이가 나타났다. 즉, 기존의 신체적 노화를 강조화는 명칭을 사용했을 때 보다 사회적 관계 혹은 정신적 성숙을 가리키는 “성숙인”과 “어르신”을 사용했을 때 평가적 태도가 가장 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다. 따라서, 노령인구에 대한 부정적인 인식을 개선하기 위해서는 노령인구의 긍정적인 사회적ㆍ심리적 제 특성을 강조하는 대안적 명칭의 개발 및 이의 지속적인 사용 촉진이 요구된다.

The purpose of this study was to meditate on the general usage of the term `No-in` for those aged 60 and over. Two methodologies were used for the study. First, a literature review with 122 domestic and foreign studies was carried out in order to find the alternative terms for `No-in`. The review from the domestic studies shows that `No-nyun-chng`, `Sung-sook-in`, `Senior`, `Silver-se-dae`, `Uh-r-shin` and `G-se-dae` have been alternatively used for `No-in`. And then, evaluative attitudes with the alternative terms were surveyed with the sample of 250 undergraduate students. The survey reveals that the undergraduate students show quite different evaluative attitudes towards those aged 60 and over depending on the alternative terms used for them. Therefore, we suggest that alternative terms reflecting positive traits of those aged 60 and over be devised in order to improve the negative images and attitudes towards them.
