Background: Dermoscopic findings of various hair and scalp disorders are available in the literatures, however the data on dermoscopic findings of tinea capitis is lacking. Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine dermoscopic findings of tinea capitis and their relations with clinical, mycological features. Methods: Dermoscopic findings of 21 tinea capitis patients who had been diagnosed with mycological study were compared with 320 healthy individuals and 329 other alopecia patients respectively. Results: Interfollicular and perifollicular scales, dirty dots, broken hairs and black dots were common dermoscopic findings of tinea captitis. Comma hair, corkscrew hair, septate hyphae-like hair, and zigzag hair were highly characteristic findings of tinea capitis which were hardly seen in control group. Among clinical subtypes, comma hairs and perifollicular pustules were more common in kerion celsi; on the other hand, broken hairs were less common in seborrheic dermatitis-like scaling types than other clinical subtypes. However, there were no significant relationship between dermoscopic findings and other clinical and mycological parameters. Conclusion: Comma hair, corkscrew hair, septate hyphae-like hairs, and zigzag hairs can be a diagnostic maker in tinea capitis. We believe that dermoscopic evaluation is a useful, non-invasive, quick method for the diagnosis of tinea capitis in order to differentiate with other alopecias.
