본 연구는 세계가치관조사 2차∼6차 데이터를 사용하여 한국인의 다문화적 태도가 세계적으로 어떤 수준에 위치하고 있는지 파악하는 한편, SSK 문화적 다양성과 공존 연구단이 수집한 ``2013 다문화사회 관련 의견조사`` 데이터를 사용하여 교육수준을 중심으로 한국인의 다문화적 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인들 간의 구조적 관계를 살펴보고자 수행되었다. 세계가치관조사 분석 결과는 한국인의 다문화적 태도가 세계 최하위 수준에 머물러 있고, 시간이 많이 흘러도 나아지는 점이 거의 없음을 보여준다. 한편 한국인의 다문화적 태도는 교육수준, 계층의식, 공동체의식, 접촉경험, 종족정체성의 영향을 받는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 특히 교육수준은 다문화적 태도에 직접효과를 발휘함은 물론 계층의식, 공동체의식, 종족정체성을 매개로 다문화적 태도에 간접효과도 행사하는 것으로 드러났다. 그리고 공동체의식과 접촉경험은 다문화적 태도에 강력한 정적 효과를 갖는 반면, 계층의식과 종족정체성은 부적 효과를 발휘하는 것으로 판명되었다. 연구결과가 제공하는 주요 시사점을 바탕으로 한국사회가 직면한 과제와 한국인의 다문화적 태도를 함양하는 데 기여할 수 있는 정책대안을 간략하게 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study was two-fold. Firstly, drawing on second to sixth wave data from World Values Survey(WVS), this study aimed to ascertain the relative level of multicultural attitudes of Korean adults compared with that of their counterparts in other countries. Secondly, using public opinion data on multicultural people in Korea collected in 2013 by the SSK Cultural Diversity and Coexistence Research Team, this study aimed to examine the structural relationships between the factors affecting multicultural attitudes among Korean adults focusing on the role played by educational attainment. Results exhibited that Korean adults` multicultural attitudes ranked among the lowest in the World, which had hardly changed over time. Regarding the structural relationships among the predictors of multicultural attitudes, it was proven that educational attainment, class identification, intergroup contact, and a sense of community all exerted a significant effect on multicultural attitudes. Especially, it turned out that educational attainment had a direct effect on multicultural attitudes and wielded an indirect effect on them through class identification, a sense of community, ethnic identity as well. While a sense of community and intergroup contact were positively associated with multicultural attitudes, class identification and ethnic identity were negatively related to multicultural attitudes. This study discussed implications and policy suggestions based on major findings that can help Korean adults embrace cultural diversity and tolerance toward multicultural families.
