이 연구는 전남 방언의 음장 실현 양상과 운율 구조 간의 관계를 방언의 변화관점에서 논의하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 전남 진도 지역의 토박이 화자를 대상으로 음장과 운율 구조에 관한 음성 실험을 실시했다. ‘장음 > 단음’의 길이 구조를 바탕으로 볼 때 전남 진도 지역의 음장 실현률은 타 방언권에 비해 상대적으로 높았다. 다만 세대와 성별에 따라 음장 실현률이 ‘노년층 남성 > 노년층 여성 > 청소년층 남성 = 청소년층 여성’의 경향을 보였다. 이와 달리 장음의 운율구조를 기반으로 한 음장 실현 양상은 세대에 따른 차이가 극명히 나타났다. 장단음 정보를 운율 구조에도 명확하게 반영하는 세대는 노년층에 한정되었으며, 청소년층은 장음 정보를 운율 구조에 반영하는 비율이 매우 낮았다. 즉, 운율 구조적 측면에서 보았을 때 전남 진도 지역의 청소년층은 음장이 소멸 과정에 들어선 것으로 생각된다. 전남 진도 지역의 음장 실현이 길이 측면과 운율 구조적 측면에서 차이를 보인 데 대해 본고에서는 후자가 이 지역의 장단음 양상을 보다 잘 보여 주는 것으로 해석하였다. 장단음의 길이 차이는 경향성을 보여 주는 데 그치지만 장음의 운율 구조 반영은 규칙성을 지니기 때문이다. 결론적으로 전남 진도 지역의 음장 실현 양상은 세대를 주요 변수로, 성별을 부차 변수로 하여 차이를 보인다. 노년층은 높은 음장 실현률을 보이나 성별에 따라 ‘남성 > 여성’의 부분적 차이가 있으며, 청소년층은 성별과 관계없이 음장이 소멸 단계에 놓여 있다.

This study aims to investigate the pronunciation patterns of length in the dialect of Jeonnam from the viewpoint of linguistic change. The results of the study are as follows: In terms of duration, the realization rate of length of the dialect in Jeonnam was relatively higher than that of other dialects. It was mainly affected by generational variables, and gender variables were also partially affected. However, differences between generations are not noticeable in the realization of length. Unlike the duration, the prosodic structure of length was very different from generation to generation. In terms of prosodic structure, the generation that accurately distinguishes the length in Jeonnam dialect was limited to the elderly. Teenagers of Jeonnam dialect could hardly distinguish length regardless of gender. Among the two conflicting results, the study determined that the pro-sodic structure better showed the length of the Jeonnam dialect. This is because the prosocid structure of length is regular, but the duration only shows the tendency. In other words, the length of the Jeonnam dialect remains only for the elderly, and the youth group is rapidly disappearing.
