It is generally said that the religious features and the lyrical features of Hyang-Ga are contradictory to each other. This perspective caused the parallelism between the researches which focused on the functions or themes of Hyang-Ga and those that focused on the structures or forms of Hyang-Ga as well as the issues on the lyricism of Jemangmea-Ga. The goal of this paper is to enquire about a new perspective on the relation between the religiosity and the lyricism of Hyang-Ga, focusing on the form of 10-line Hyang-Ga.
Hyang-Ga is religious poetry sung in a ritual context. The interjections of 10-line Hyang-Ga may be regarded as sacred exclamations which are found in many other countries’ ritual songs such as Song in the Book of Poetry (詩頌) or Hula of Hawaii. Due to the interjection, 10-line Hyang-Ga becomes the poetic form which best expresses the religious awakening in a highly ecstatic style. This form is also optimized for the lyrical poetry which structures the sublimation of an individual into a higher existence who awakes to transcendent things. Shakespeare’s Sonnets express this awakening through the imbalance between the three quatrains and the couplet. Likewise, 10-line Hyang-ga incorporates an interjection between the first eight lines and the last two lines of each poem, which alters the tone. This means that Jemangmea-Ga and Wonwangseang-Ga incorporate religious themes even within their lyrical poetry. In conclusion, this paper asserts that true religious poetry cannot be differentiated from the lyrical poetry.
