System of rice intensification (SRI) is a sustainable innovation to cultivate rice with young seedling, wide space, organic fertilizer, and intermittent irrigation. SRI method reported have higher rice yield than conventional method. Faculty of Agricultural Technology have been developed SRI since 2008. The aim of this study is to figure out development of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) by research, training, and community development. Research was developed in some areas around Yogyakarta by developing water saving model irrigation in SRI irrigated area. This study resulted that SRI reduced water irrigation, but the rice yield was not significantly different from conventional method. Rice yield mainly affected by plant vegetation coefficient and seasonal yield coefficient. For more systematic evaluation of SRI cultivation, bioreactor concept of SRI was developed. We examined plant growth as the output reaction between the rate of nutrient uptake and water absorption by rice plant. Rice plant growth was modeled by monomolecular equation. SRI resulted better growth than conventional as well as its rice yield. SRI was also disseminated by community services. UGM has collaborated with Ministry of Public Works and farmer group to carry out SRI training for farmers in some area in Java. Further, they can developed SRI in their area. This activity was held in some area, such as Yogyakarta province (Sleman, Kulonprogo, Bantul, and Gunungkidul regencies); East Java province (Lumajang, Malang, Nganjuk, Mojokerto, Kediri, and Situbondo regencies); and Central Java province (Banyumas, Tegal, and Kebumen regencies). Rice yield of SRI with organic fertilizer was decreased in first year, but it increased in the following year. Besides promoting water saving, the community services of SRI also promote healthy soil due to organic fertilizer.
