본 논문의 목적은 강릉지역에서 전승되고 있는 여서낭신화를 분석하여 지역문화의 특징을 밝히는데 있다. 강릉에는 다양한 층위의 여서낭이 존재하고 풍부한 신화가 전승되고 있어 지역의 역사와 삶의 내용, 가치관을 살피기에 적절하기 때문이다. 조선조 강릉시내에 있던 대성황사에서 모시던 여성황들과 강릉단오제의 주신(主神)인 대관령국사여성황, 그리고 해사(海事)를 돕는 어촌의 여서낭들을 분석 대상으로 한다. 이를 통해 드러난 내용은 다음 세가지로 요약된다. 첫째 대성황사의 여성황중 연화부인 신화는 자연신에서 인격신으로 변모하는 과정을 반영하고 있고 동시에 지역내 권력구조의 갈등을 보여준다. 전형적인 영웅신화의 면모를 보이는 연화부인은 수신(水神)의 흔적을 지닌 인격신인데 신라말 경주에서 이주한 김주원의 후손들이 강릉에서 사회적 지위를 획득하는 과정을 반영하고 있다. 강릉단오제의 수호신인 국사여성황은 호환에 간 여인으로 무속적 성격을 보이는 신이다. 하지만 국사여성황의 신격화 과정에는 조선조에 들어와 강릉단오제를 주관했던 향리(鄕吏)계급의 권력이 작용한 것으로 보인다. 어촌의 여서낭은 바다에서 떠들어온 서낭과 원혼형 서낭으로 나뉜다. 바다에서 떠들어온 여서낭신화는 새로운 문명의 유입과 일정한 관련성을 갖는 것으로 분석되었다. 마지막으로 억울한 죽음의 원한을 풀어주고 공동체와 화해하는 과정에서 등장한 여서낭 신화들이 있다. 죽음의 원인은 자연재해와 권력과의 갈등으로 나눌 수 있는데 이들은 모두 한풀이를 중시하는 무속적 심성을 바탕으로 형성된 신화라는 공통점이 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to reveal cultural traits in Gangneung area by analyzing the female deity shrine myths. In Gangneung, various forms of female deity exist and many more myths carry on today reflecting much of its history, life and values. The analysis will be made on main Female deity worshiped in nearby village shrines of Gangneung, namelyDegwalryung guksa female deity, and female deity who have provide aid with maritime affairs during Chosun period. The information found by analyzed them can be summarized into three parts. First of all, female deity myth present in village shrines and female deity myth inGangneung Danoje festival both display the transformation from nature deity into character deity and at the same time exhibits regional power conflict. The 'Lady Yeon-Hwa' myth originally has water god character, but in Chosun dynasty, as guksa female deity myth rose to the fore representing Hang-ri (someone who inherently works under a government officer) power, it no longer reveals such character. Secondly, the influence of foreign female deity myths have been analyzed to have brought forth a certain level of influx of new civilization. Lastly, there are several female diety myths present in the process of relieving them from falsely accused deaths and reconciling with the village community. The cause of death can be separated by the conflict between nature disasters and authority. All of these are myths formed by placing great value in the relief of rancor through shamanistic nature.
