This research was performed to find out the influences of Lactobacillus reuteri KCTC 3594 intake on skin conditions of middle-aged women(40±5 years old) for 12 weeks(from June 12 to September 2). Thirty female volunteers were randomly divided into the three groups of 10 people; control group(hereinafter referred to as Cont), L. reuteri probiotics group(Pro) and L. reuteri paraprobiotics group(Para). Each subject has been directed to intake one capsule of L. reuteri(1×1010 CFU / capsule), a day for the 12 week-period. After the 12-week treatment, Cont group showed a decrease in moisture content(p<.05) but it increased both in Pro group(p<.001) and Para group(p<.001). The sebum content showed a tendency to increase in Cont group and increased both for Pro group(p<.01) and Para group(p<.001). The level of skin roughness increased in Cont group(p<.05) but decreased in two other groups; Pro group(p<.001), and Para group(p<.01). The amount of skin wrinkle has increased in Cont group(p<.05) but decreased in two other groups; Pro group(p<.001), and Para group(p<.05). Comprehensively, the experiment indicates that the intake of probiotics and paraprobiotics is effective in improving skin health and Pro group showed better result than Para group. Therefore, the result implies that intake of L. reuteri induced intestinal immune balance and consequently intrinsic skin change and L. reuteri probiotics and paraprobiotics are expected to be used as a beauty cosmetic food.
