The work deals with the symbolic of nature in Carpathian Ruthenia, which belonged to the so-called First Czech Republic, and now it belongs to Ukraine. Although that area belonged to the Czech lands just shortly, it influenced them lot. That space attracted artists, mainly writers, who have written the works, which the Czech included in the canon of Czech literature.
The exceptionality of the area of Carpathian Ruthenia lies primarily in the underdevelopment of the region. Life there looked like at the 11th century in the Czech Republic, as written by the writer Ivan Olbracht. Writers reflect the Carpathian nature, which works for the people as life itself, or faith, the antiquity of the customs, which is there for centuries, respect, and immense poverty that drove many Ruthenians to leave it for a better life, perhaps to America.
On the basis of the examination of the two works by Karel Capek - The Ballad of Juraj Cup and Hordubal - the characteristics of that space and its symbolic will be presented. Carpathian Ruthenia seems to be a mysterious place, from which the special characters grow up. An important term is also the topos of the mountain. As for the uniqueness of the area, it is a space of the exotic, periphery, contrast, underdevelopment and symbolic of the charming nature of that area, it is the belief in superstition or the supernatural beings, the soul of the Ruthenian nation and the birth of the myth.
