본 논문은 <운영전> 서사가 지닌 ‘비극’의 요소를 서사구조적 측면에서 분석한 글이다. 지금까지 <운영전>의 비극성이 내용과 작품 외적 정보를 기반으로 증명되었다면, 본 논문은 <운영전>의 서사구조에 필연적인 비극적 요소가 내재되어 있음을 밝히고자 하였다. <운영전>만의 서사구조적 비극성을 구명하기 위한 키워드를 ‘공간’과 ‘관계 맺음’에 두고 다음의 두 가지 가설을 세웠다. 첫째, <운영전>의 서사구조는 창세신화에서 추출되는 공간 창출의 서사패턴이 적용된다. 둘째, 이러한 공간 창출은 새로운 존재 공간과 타인과의 관계 맺음을 향한 인간의 본질적 욕망에서 비롯된다. 이 두 가지 가설은 <운영전>의 주요 등장인물의 행적에서 증명된다. 다만 <운영전> 등장인물의 공간 창출은 모두 실패로 귀결되고 그 상황이 반복되면서 비극의 정서가 축적된다는 점, 새로운 존재 공간으로 이동하기 위해 본래의 존재 공간에서 분리·이탈해야 하는 인간의 근원적 두려움이 내포되어 있다는 점이 <운영전>의 서사를 비극으로 감지하게 만든다. 본궁에서 이탈한 안평대군은 운영·김진사와의 관계 맺음을 통해 수성궁을 중심으로 한 새로운 세계를 구현하려 하나 실패하며, 운영과 김진사의 관계 맺음은 수성궁을 넘어 그들만의 존재 공간을 욕망하게 하는 동기가 되었으나 결국은 실패, 죽음으로 끝을 낸다. 유영은 현실과 이상 사이에서 갈등하다 운영과 김진사와의 관계 맺음을 통해 실현될 수 없는 이상에 좌절하며 자신의 존재 공간을 부정한다. 악인형 인물 특 또한 독자적 존재 공간이 허락되지 못한 노비의 신분으로서 부당한 방법을 통해서라도 자신만의 존재 공간을 확보하려 하나 역시 성공하지 못한다. 이렇듯 공간 창출에 실패하는 서사 패턴의 반복, 새로운 존재 공간의 욕망에 비례하는 분리와 이탈의 두려움이 독자로 하여금 <운영전>을 긴장된 비극의 서사로 받아들이게 하는 또 하나의 원인이 된다고 할 수 있다.

This thesis is about the “tragic” emotions in Unyeong-jeon analyzed in the aspect of the narrative structure. While these emotions have been proved with the story and external information so far, I would like to discuss essential tragic factors in the narrative structure. Therefore, I hypothesized the following two things based on the two keywords, ‘space’ and ‘relationship’, to study Unyeong-joen’s own structural tragedy. First of all, the narrative pattern of space creation from the creation mythology is applied to the structure of this novel. Second, this space creation is from humans’ essential desires for new existing space and relationships. The main characters’ whereabouts actually prove these two hypotheses. However, the space creation of the characters in Unyeong-jeon ends in failure, and as the same situation repeats, the following two factors make us perceive the narrative of Unyeong-jeon to be tragic: the fact that the failures cumulate tragic feelings; and the fundamental fear of humans when they get separated from familiar space to move to new space. Anpyeongdaegun, who left his palace, tries to make a new world around the Suseonggung through getting to know Unyeong and Kimjinsa, but this motivates Unyeong and Kimjinsa to have their own space beyond the Suseonggung, and it ends up as failure and death. This causes Yuyeong to be ambivalent between ideal and reality, and he denies his existing space as his ideal can not come true. The antagonist, Teuk, also tries to have his own existing space using unreasonable methods even though as Nobi he can not have any independant space; but he fails as well. In a word, readers find Unyeong-joen tragic because of the repetitive narrative patterns which fail to create space, and the fear of being separated which is proportional to the desire for new existing space.
