현대 도덕 철학에서 중요한 주제들 중 하나는 행위 동기와 도덕적 가치가 조화를 이룬 삶의 문제다. 이 주제에는 우정과 사랑을 통한 정서적 유대, 그리고 동료 의식과 연대의 문제가 함축되어 있다. 그런데 도덕 철학에서 사랑을 비롯한 감정의 문제를 진지하게 논의하려면 우선 감정의 성격에 관한 논의가 선행되어야 한다. 감정에 대한 철학적 논의는 현재 인지주의와 비인지주의 간의 논쟁을 통해 진행되고 있다. 이 글에서는 감정에 대한 철학적 인지주의 입장에서 애덤 스미스가 고찰하는 동감과 공평한 관찰자 개념을 논의하려고 한다. 스미스의 도덕 철학은 비교적 최근까지도 흄의 아류 정도로 간주되었다. 그러나 최근 30년 동안 스미스에 대한 재조명 작업이 꾸준히 진행된 결과, 스미스의 도덕 감정론이 쇼펜하우어나 흄의 동감윤리보다 진전된 시각을 제시한다는 주장또한 제기된다. 현대 도덕 철학자들 중 누스바움과 투겐타트는 스미스의 도덕 감정론을 중심에 두고 연민과 같은 도덕 감정과 행위 동기의 문제를 고찰한다. 이러한 고찰들은, 스미스와 함께, 행위 동기와 도덕적 가치가 조화를 이룬 삶에 있어 감정의 역할을 강조하고 있다.

In modern moral philosophy, one of the most important themes is the harmony of life between the motive of action and moral values. In the theme, aspects of emotional ties through friendship and love, fellow feeling and solidarity are implied. But in order to discuss the issues of emotion (including love), first, the thoughts about the character of emotion must precede. Now the philosophical discussions about emotion are presented in the debate between the philosophical cognitivism of emotion and non-cognitivism. This thesis focuses on Adam Smith’s concept of sympathy and impartial spectator in terms of cognitivism. As seen in Rawls’ account of him, in recent years, Smith’s moral philosophy has been regarded as Hume’s epigone. But after Smith’s work has been steadily revisited for thirty years, it is proposed that Smith’s theory of moral sentiment presents more productive view than Hume and Schopenhauer’s ethics of sympathy. Modern moral philosopher, M. Nussbaum and E. Tugendhat research into moral emotions like compassion and motives of action. With Smith they emphasize the role of emotion in the harmony of life between the motive of action and moral values.
