영국의 대정치가 윈스턴 처칠에 대한 추앙은 우리나라도 포함하여 범세계적이지만 아일랜드인들의 태도는 반감에 가깝다. 이 논문은 그 이유로서 처칠의 아일랜드정책을 조사했다. 조사방향은 두 가지 특징을 지닌다. 첫째는 영국에서 “아일랜드문제”의 긴 맥락을 고려하여 19세기말 아일랜드자치반대의 선봉장이던 랜돌프 처칠의 아일랜드정책도 조사했다. 둘째는 처칠의 저술가 면모에 주목하여 그의 주요 저서를 1차사료로서 이용했다. 발견한 사항은 세 가지다. 첫째, 랜돌프 처칠의 아일랜드정책은 영국정쟁의 일환이었고 얼스터의 개신교도를 선동함으로써 아일랜드분단의 단초를 놓았다. 둘째, 아들 윈스턴 처칠은 20세기 초 자유당으로 전향했던 짧은 시기를 제외하고 보수당 복귀 후부터는 아일랜드분단과 남부아일랜드에 대한 영국의 영향력 행사에서 극우 입장을 견지했다. 셋째, 처칠의 글쓰기에는 현역 정치가로서의 의도가 크게 작용했다. 이런 발견은 처칠의 한반도정책을 타당하게 평가하는 작업에도 시사점을 제공한다.

Though Winston Churchill has been held in high esteem worldwidely, Irish attitudes appear to be rather antagonistic. This paper investigates Churchill`s Irish policy as a source of their antipathy. The approach has two traits. Firstly, in order to put his policy in the context of "the Irish Question" Randolph Churchill`s anti Home Rule activities are examined. Secondly, Irish policies of the Churchillian father and son are traced mainly in the latter`s celebrated books. This paper presents three points. Firstly, Randolph Churchill`s Irish policy was a part of domestic power struggle and by instigating religious conflicts he played a great part towards the partition of Ireland. Secondly, Winston Churchill maintained extreme rightist attitudes towards both Ulster and the Irish state except the short period as a Liberal minister. Thirdly, Churchill`s writings plainly reflect his desire to be in power. In appraising Churchill`s policy towards Korea these findings need be duly considered.
