본 연구는 수화교육의 현황과 과제를 농인 당사자 관점에서 알아봄으로써 농아동을 위한 수화 교육 접근 방향을 제안해 보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 대구, 경북 지역 및 서울, 경기 지역에 거주하는 농인 6명에게 포커스 집단 인터뷰를 실시하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 농 자녀를 둔 부모에게 제공되는 정보가 한정적이므로 다양한 정보제공을 통해 농아동의 전 생애 기반을 둔 미래 설계가 필요하다고 하였다. 둘째, 부모들은 대부분 농 자녀의 언어를 구어로 선택하고 구화중심 교육을 하고 있다고 하였다. 이에 농 자녀를 위한 부모들의 인식 개선이 요구된다고 하였다. 셋째, 이중문화-이중언어접근의 효과에 대한 근거 수집과 홍보가 필요하고, 넷째, 수화의 조기도입을 위한 수화습득 환경이 구축되어야 한다고 하였다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 농아동을 위한 수화 교육 접근 방향에 대해 논의하였다.

The purpose of this study was to propose the approaching direction of sign language education by studying current status of sign language education on the deaf cultural point of view. Six deaf people were joined the focus group interview for this study; who are living in Deagu, KoungBuk, Seoul and Geyounggi area. The results were as follow; first of all, it need to design the future of deaf children about their whole life by providing various information because supplied information is too limited currently to parents of deaf children. Second, the most of parents are selecting oral language for main communicating method and to teach their children base on that. Therefore, it is demanded to change parent``s mind for their deaf children. Third, it need to collect evidences about the efficacy of bicultural-bilingual approach and promote such a approach. Finally, it has to be build-up sign language learning condition for adopting sign language earlier. Based on the result of this study, it was discussed the approaching direction of sign language education for deaf children.
