황동규 시인이 긴 시간 동안 관심을 기울인 주제는 ‘죽음’이다. 시 전반에 나타나는 ‘죽음에 대한 응시’는「풍장」전후의 시에 다수 표현되었고, 끊임없이 변주되어왔다. 이 때문에 황동규 시 전반에는 제의적 특성의 다면적 양상이 드러나는데, 특히 ‘일상에서 진행되는 정화의식으로서의 제의적 특성’과 함께 ‘현실적 욕망에서 벗어나려는 자유의지로서의 제의적 특성’의 공존이 두드러진다. 죽음에 대한 실존에서 벗어난 자유로움을 추구한 시인은 삶과 죽음의 관계를 새롭게 정립하고자 하였다. ‘풍장(風葬)’이라는 독특한 장례의 양식에서 삶과 죽음이 맞닿는 시간을 인지한 시인은「풍장」연작에서 죽음을 일반의 비극적 형상이 아니라 긍정적 세계관으로 변용시켜 나타 내었다. 사후(死後) ‘절차로서의 제의’가 아니라 죽음을 대변하기 위한 방법으로 삶 속에서 진행되고 지속되는 제의, 현재의 현실적 욕망에서 벗어나 정신의 가벼움을 확인하고자 하는 자유의지로서의 제의를 작품으로 표현한 것이다. ‘풍장(風葬)’이 삶에 활력을 불어넣는 동시에 공동 운명체적 연대감을 확인하는 한마당의 축제일 수 있다는 점과 함께 삶과 죽음이 맞물려 순환하는 자연의 원리를 함축하는 시간의 증표임을 「풍장」연작에서 확인할 수 있다.

The theme in which a poet Hwang Dong-hyu had been interested for a long time is ‘death.’ Especially, ‘staring at death,’ which is shown the whole poem, was expressed numerously before and after「Pungjang(風葬, Aerial Sepulture)」, and has been varied constantly. For this reason, the multi-lateral aspect of a ritualistic characteristic is revealed in the whole poem by Hwang Dong-hyu. ‘A ritualistic characteristic as a free will to escape from a realistic desire’ coexists together with ‘a ritualistic characteristic as the ritual of exorcism that is progressed in daily life.’ Poet Hwang Dong-hyu perceived the time of being met life and death in the form of a unique funeral called ‘Pungjang.’ The death in 「Pungjang」is not a general tragic shape, but is shown with being varied as the positive view of the world. The aim was to pursue freedom from destiny with escaping from the existence on death and to newly establish relationship between life and death. It is perceived not ‘a ritual as procedure’ that is passed after being dead, but a ritual that is progressed and continued in life as a method for standing for death, and a ritual of freedom with the aim of confirming the lightness of spirit with escaping from a realistic desire of the present. ‘Pungjang’ comes to be confirmed to be a ritual of infusing vitality into life and simultaneously to be a point available for being a festival of Hanmadang that identifies the feeling of solidarity based on the common destiny, and a token of time, which implies the principle of nature that circulates with being interconnected life and death.
