본 연구는 ‘실제 토론’과 ‘가상 토론’이라는 언어 프레임과 ‘후보자의 실제 음성’과 ‘후보자의 변형된 음성’이라는 음성 프레임을 활용해 대통령 후보자들이 강조하는 현안의 관련성이 젊은 유권자들이 지각하는 현안의 중요성에 영향을 미치는가를 분석했다. 통제실험 결과, 실제 토론과 가상 토론이라는 프레임 유형에 각각 노출된 젊은 피험자들은 토론에서 강조한 현안들의 중요성을 주목하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 프레이밍 효과는 없으나 현안의 중요성 인식은 사후측정에서 증가해 대통령 후보자 토론이 젊은 유권자들의 의제를 설정하는 것으로 조사됐다. 특히후보자들이 강조한 현안이 젊은 피험자들의 현실과 연관되는 것이어서 현안의 현실 연관성이 중요한 것으로 드러났다. 구체적으로 ‘북한 핵문제 해결’은 실제토론 조건과 가상 토론 조건 모두에서 가장 중요한 현안으로 인식됐으며 현안과 사실에 대한 젊은 유권자들의 정향욕구는 이들이 지각한 현안 중요성에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤다. 더구나 사실에 대한 정향욕구는 현안과 상호작용해 젊은 유권자들의 현안 중요성 인식에 영향을 미쳤다.

This study examines whether the relevance of issues emphasized by presidential candidates influences young adults’ perception of the importance of the issues by considering a verbal frame (real debate versus fictional debate) and an audio frame (natural voice versus altered voice). The results of a controlled experiment show that young adults exposed to the real-debate frame and those exposed to the fictional debate frame pay attention to the importance of the issues emphasized in the debates. Accordingly, framing effects are not found and the perceived importance of issues is increased after the exposure to the debate, referring to the agenda-setting effects of presidential debates on the public perception of issues. In particular, the issues the candidates emphasize are related to the reality that young adults face, which means that the relevance of issues to the reality is important. The issue of solutions to North Korean nuclear problems is considered to be most important by young adults exposed to the real-debate frame and the fictional-debate frame. Young adults’ need for orientation toward issues and facts has significant effects on their perception of issue importance. In addition, young adults’ need for orientation toward facts is significantly interacted with issues, which influences their perceived importance of issues.
