본 연구는 한국 가족문화에서 발생하고 있는 고부갈등을 Walsh의 Family Resilience 관점에서 분석하여 대처요소를 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 우선 고부간의 갈등 및 Family Resilience를 이론적으로 살펴본 후 두개의 사례를 제시하여 고부간의 갈등을 분석하였다. 사례분석은 사회심리적 시각에서 고부갈등에 대한 이해를 기반으로, Walsh가 제시한 Family Resilience Model의 Belief System, Organizational Pattern, Communication Process의 입각하여 공통적인 고부갈등의 Family Resilience 요소를 며느리 중심으로 분석하였다. 연구방법을 통해 고부간의 갈등을 적절히 대처하며 Family Resilience하게 되는 요소r로 첫째 , Belief System에서는 신앙심, 효사상, 며느리의 경제적 독립 자신감, 자녀에 대한 헌신성, 미래에 대한 낙관성, 갈등해결의 인내심이 분석되었고. 둘째, Organizational Pattern에서는 시댁문화의 적응, 적절한 거리감, 며느리의 경제적 활동이 주요 요소로 나왔으며, 셋째, Communication Process는 시어머니와 며느리의 메세지 전달 노력, 문제해결 대안구상 등이 분석되었다. 이와 같은 가족 내 Family Resilience 요소는 가족 내 뿐만 아니라 문화적, 사회적 영향을 받고 있음도 보여주고 있는데 가족 내 남편과의 원만한 관계유지, 개방적 의사소통 가능성, 외부와의 관계에서는 부부갈등에 대한 개방성, 적절한 자원보유가 며느리 입장에서 고부갈등을 견디고 성숙하게 하였다. 거시적으로는 사회적으로 여성지위의 변화가 며느리로 하여금 고부갈등에 회피가 아닌 적극적인 방법으로 대처하게 하는 행동이 보였다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze discord between mother and daughter-in-law arising particularly in Korean family culture in view of 'Family Resilience' of Walsh and present a discord model. For this purpose, first, I examined the theoretical background of the discord between mother and daughter-in-law and family resilience, and presented two examples to provide analytical view of the discord. At the second stage, I analyzed the family resilience factor of the mother and daughter-in-law discord in view point` of daughter-in-law with Belief System, Organizational Pattern and Communication Process of the Walsh`s Family Resilience model as basis of the analysis. As the result of the study, I found out three factors to create family resilience which converts the mother and daughter-in-law discord to mutual understanding and harmony. First, in the belief system, I found out factors such as religious belief, obedience to parents, economic independency of daughter-in-law, contribution to children, positive view toward the future and endurance to solve disputes. Second, in the organizational pattern, I came up with harmonization with husband`s family culture, reasonable distance from husband`s family and having jobs of daughter-in-law. Third, in communication process, I believe that the effort of communication between mother and daughter-in-law and finding out about the ways of solving problems. The listed family resilience factors are affected from social and cultural aspects as well as individual families. Wives will be able to endure and overcome the discord by close relationship and communication between daughter-in-law and husband and by disclosing problems with husbands and having proper resources. In social point of view, having jobs or taking part in other forms of social activities enables wives to confront and overcome the discord and problems with mother-in-laws.
