노벨 문학상은 아시아인으로는 최초로 1913년 인도의 시성 라빈드라나트 타고르(Rabindranath Tagore)가 수상하였다. 일본인 수상자는 1968년 가와바타 야스나리, 1994년 오에 겐자부로 2명이 수상하였다. 이러한 가운데 2005년부터 한국 작가 고은(高銀) 시인이 외신 등에 의해 한국인 최초 노벨 문학상 수상 후보로 거론되면서 기대감이 고조되었다. 하지만 번번이 실패로 돌아감으로써 과제만을 제시해 주었다. 그래서 한국이 노벨 문학상을 수상하기 위해서는 어떻게 하면 가능할까 고심한 끝에 이웃 나라 일본의 노벨 문학상 수상작가인 가와바타 야스나리와 오에 겐자부로가 수상을 하게 된 시대적 배경 및 작가에 대해 알아보고 노벨 문학상 수상에 이르기까지의 전반적인 사항들을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 한국 문학의 노벨 문학상 수상 전망 및 검토가 이루어질 것이고 나아가서는 한국 문학 번역의 문제점과 해결 방안이 모색되리라 보았다. 그리하여 가와바타와 오에의 작품 보다는 전반적인 상황 등을 살펴보고 한국 작가의 노벨 문학상 수상 가능성도 높다는 것을 새삼 인식하였다.
