이 논문에서는 긴아리랑의 가사를 연구 대상으로 삼고 어휘를 해석하고 내용을 살피며 주제를 정리해보았다. 그동안 긴아리랑에 대해서는 다양한 연구들이 있었지만 가사를 심도 있게 고찰한 것은 부족했는데, 이 논문에서는 남성이 부르는 긴아리랑의 가사 12수와 여성이 부르는 긴아리랑의 가사 9수를 본격적으로 고찰한 것이다. 그 결과 긴아리랑의 가사는 연정과 극복의 지향을 노래하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 극복을 지향하는 내용으로는 여성 의식의 추구, 시름과 고난의 극복 등이었다. 긴아리랑 가사의 주제에서 남녀가 서로 그리워하며 사랑하는 연정의 노래가 가장 많았다. 이와 같은 모습은 여성이 부르는 긴아리랑의 경우더욱 두드러져 여성 의식까지 추구하고 있었는데, 가부장제에 맞서는 것이어서 주목되었다. 긴아리랑은 우리나라 아리랑의 원형이다. 또한 현재 전승되고 있는 우리나라의 아리랑을 대표한다. 이와 같은 차원에서 긴아리랑의 가사를 집중적으로 살펴본 이 논문이 정선아리랑의 이해와 전승에 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to interpret words and theme of Jeongseon Arirang. One of the most fundamental functions of lyrics of Jeongseon Arirang is for singing so that the singer and audience can communicate with each other. Jeongseon Arirang interpenetrates into people`s mind by representing various aspects of their life: work, customs, love, farewell, marriage, hardships, sorrow, yearning, and so on. Thus the words are related to people`s living. Through the lyrics of Jeongseon Ariran, we can understand various patterns of Jeongseon`s society, nature, and their life. Jeongseon Arirang has been sung not only by Jeongseon region`s people but also by Korean people in general. In this sense, Jeongseon Arirang can be said to record and transmit the history and life of Korean people as a whole. The 23 stanzas of long Jeongseon Arirang embody the various contents of bitter feelings of, for example, the displaced during the Koryo dynasty, the wounds of love and separation, uneasiness of life, poverty, sexual desire and so on. These words reveal the reality and wisdom of common people`s life. Therefore, the lyrics of Jeongseon Arirang are inseparably related to people`s life. That means, when we listen to or sing the words of Jeongseon Arirang, we should consider the situation of Korean people. Jeongseon Arirang is a folk song which is sung from generation to generation by spoken language. The history of Jeongseon Arirang dates back to the times even before Chosun Dynasty. The origin of Jeongseon Arirang was Guchlhyun who was the 7th loyal subject of Koryo Dynasty after its collapse. The fundamental feature of folk song reflects people`s pain and sorrow. This essay analyzes the lyrics of Jeongseon Arirang, and finds that the love theme between a man and a woman dominates the song, which, in fact, is quite all-encompassing, not limited to life, grief, suffering, fidelity, and even feminism.
