1930년대 『매일신보』에 한문현토소설을 10년간 연재한 이보상은 1908년 탁지부관리를 시작으로 10여 년 관리 생활을 하다가 1930년 무렵부터 『매일신보』 기자 생활을 했던 것으로 보인다. 『장학월보』의 편집 겸 발행인이었고, 『匈牙利 愛國者 蘇士傳』과 『伊太利少年』 등 교육적 효과가 있다고 여겨지는 외국 글을 국한문혼용체로 번역하여 간행하였다. 1926년 11월 『啓明』 15호와 16호에는 한문현토체로 「洪吉童傳」을 게재했다. 이보상이 『매일신보』에 처음 연재한 작품은 「심청전」인데 이어서 「별주부전」, 「흥부전」, 「춘도기우」를 계속 연재하면서 이들을 ‘靑邱叢談’이라는 명칭으로 묶었다. 그 서문을 통해 보건대 이보상의 소설 관념은 ‘역사 기록의 보완’이라는 전래적 의식에 닿아 있다. 「춘도기우」는 「최척전」 계열에 속하는 「홍도」 이야기를 부연한 소설이다. 전체 413회에 걸쳐 연재되었는데, 30회의 장회로 구분되어 있다. 「홍도」 이야기를 부연했으나, 기본 골격만 이어받았을 뿐 주인공의 신분과 활동은 전혀 다르게 변개되었다. 주인공의 지위가 높아짐으로써 당시 주요 인물들을 서사 대상에 포함시킬 수 있었는데, 가장 부각되는 인물은 권율이다. 권율에 대한 찬사는 일제강점기에 민족 문화를 회복하려 했던 민족주의 진영의 운동과 궤를 같이 한다.

Lee Bosang had published hanmun novels serially for ten years in Maeilshinbo(每日申報). Before it, he had held various government posts in succession. In 1908, he had published Janhakbo(奬學報), Galsosajeon(갈蘇士傳), Italysoneon(伊太利少年). In 1926, he had ritten “Honggildongjeon(洪吉童傳)” in Geymyung(啓明). In this novel, he added Korean endings to classical Chinese phrases. Lee Bosang had ublished “Simcheongjeon(沈淸傳)”, “Beoljubujeon(鱉主簿傳)”, “Heongbujeon(興夫傳)” and “Chundogiu(春桃奇遇)” one by one, he named it all Cheongguchongdam靑邱叢談. In preface of it, we can read his concept of novel which is related on conventional concept. He spoke of novel as a supplement history. He wrote “Chundogiu(春桃奇遇)” by amplifying “Hongdo(紅桃)” which is a different version of “Cheochekjeon(崔倜傳).” Chundogiu appeared serially in 413 installments. Chundogiu is based on “Hongdo(紅桃)”, but is very different. Its hero is capable person and assists a combat leader. Therefore Geonwul(權慄) such as a historic great man could be appeared in narrative. Geonwul is very admired by writter. It is related compaign of nationalism to make a recovery of national culture.
