본고는 서천군 설화의 내용과 그 의미에 대해서 살펴보았다. 그 내용면에서는 서천군 설화를 풍수설화와 불교설화로 유형화하였다. 서천군 마서면에는 절터가 있었다고 한다. 그래서 인지 풍수설화와 부처의 영험이 전 설화의 기저에 나타나고 있고 중에 관한 이야기도 있다. 그리고 설화의 내용도 그리 길지 않은 단편이다. 서천은 바닷가이고 중국과 교류가 있으며 모시를 생산한 곳이고 풍유하게 살았던 덕택으로 후손에 대한 복덕을 기리고 부처에게 공덕을 비는 설화가 많아 보인다. 본고의 풍수설화에서는 계란을 이용해 명당을 빼앗은 한산 이씨의 시조 설화와 <월명산에 얽힌 설화>가 있다. 특히 <월명산에 얽힌 설화>에서는 풍수설화와 함께 <박씨전>의 이야기가 혼재되어 하나의 이야기로 전승되고 있다. 불교설화에서는 <밖미륵골의 설화>와 <제일가는 사위를 얻은 설화>가 있다. <밖미륵골의 설화>는 한 여인의 부스럼으로 인하여 동네의 부정을 막기 위한 이야기로 미륵을 도구 삼아 부처의 영험함을 전승하고 있다. <제일가는 사위를 얻은 설화>도 부처의 영험함을 나타내는 설화다. 또, 중의 부정적인 모습과 부처로 현신한 모습을 나타내고 있으며, 불교의 영험과 맹목적 맹신을 조심해야 한다고 알려주고 있다.

The present paper reviews a collection of folk tales from Seocheon-gun and examines their contents and meaning. According to content, the folk tales are categorized into stories of geomancy and Buddhism. The category of geomancy include a story of the progenitor of the Hansan Yi clan and another of Mt. Wolmyeong. In the latter, specifically, the plot of “The Story of a Woman Named Bak(朴氏傳)” is embedded on the main story of geomancy to form a single tale. The category of Buddhism include a story of Bakmireukgol (Outer Valley of Maitreya) and another of a couple who marry off their daughter to the most-coveted man in town. The story of Bakmireukgol depicts a village which tries to prevent a woman`s abscess from affecting the entire village members, with Maitreya as a tool to expound the omnipotence of the Buddha. The other story about the perfect son-in-law also portrays the Buddha`s miraculous power.
