이 논문은 서사민요인 <진주낭군>의 전승 양상과 그 서사의 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 먼저 이 작품의 기원과 작품명을 확정하고, 이 민요의 분포상황을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 그리고 전반적인 사설의 구조를 비교하여 표준형과 변이형을 구분하고, 그 변이 양상과 의미를 살피고자 한다. 내용적인 측면에서는 비극적 결말을 맞는 며느리의 삶을 통해 사회적 약자로서의 여성의 삶과 그 서사의 의미를 파악하고자 한다. <진주낭군>은 진주 기생 월정화 고사에서 기원한 진주 지역의 노래라고 보아야 한다. 아울러 그 제목도 현재 통칭되는 <진주난봉가>의 부정적인 이미지를 벗고, 서사에 담긴 의미를 충실히 표출할 수 있는 <진주낭군>이 적절하다고 판단된다. <진주낭군>의 전승지역은 현재 조사된 자료를 근거로 파악하면 영호남 지역에 주로 분포하고, 충청 이북권역으로는 전파가 이루어지지 않은 특성을 찾을 수 있다. 그리고 그 사설은 순차적인 단순구조로 표준형의 사설을 비교적 온전히 유지하면서 전승되는 특징이 있다. 그렇지만 표준형의 사설에서는 완결된 서사 맥락을 파악하기에 부족함이 있어, 서두부의 사설이 확대된 변이형을 가지고 그 완형의 서사를 재구성할 필요가 있다. 이를 통해 보다면 <진주낭군>의 서사적 의미는 고된 시집살이를 참아가며 남편의 출세와 사랑을 기대했던 여성이, 생각 없이 무심하게 행동하는 남편에게 자결로써 강하게 항거하여 남편을 각성시키고 영원한 사랑을 역설적으로 희구하는 강인함에서 찾을 수 있다. 이러한 서사 의미는 영남(경북)지역 내방가사 중 <규원가>류의 서사적 의미와 상통하며 향유 의식도 유사하다고 볼 수 있다. 그 결과 <진주낭군>의 전승이 경북 지역에 집중된 것으로 판단된다.

This paper is intended to illuminate traditional aspects of an epic folk song and its the meaning of narrative. First, confirm the origin of this work and title, will try to look at the distribution situation of this folk song. And by comparing the structure of overall song lyrics, divide standard pattern and variant pattern, and will check aspects of the variation and the meaning. In terms of content through tragic ending daughters-in-law`s life, would like to understand the women`s life as underprivileged and meaning of the narrative. Proceeded to discuss the results as follows: First, the origin of can be found at the published 『Koryosa(고려사)』 「Akji(악지)」. Through it, can be estimated that is the song occurred in Jinju region. Second, the most appropriate name designated this work is . Third, the distribution of the work by focusing occurred area Jinju, mainly has been handed down in the adjacent central south region. Fourth, as the song lyrics have sequential structure and simple structure, little variation, in the process which is said it, primarily have maintained standard pattern. Fifth, the meaning of the narrative of this work can be said strong protest about her husband`s betrayed and unjust tyranny. However at the end, by the device that does not end with hate, protest, yet paradoxically, is longing for her husband`s love. These the meaning of the narrative is the point which equals with Zenana lyrics of women`s literature.
