Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE) can be very dangerous to human health particularly because vancomycin resistance genes can be transferred to other gram-positive bacteria. Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction(Multiplex PCR) has been reported as an effective method to detect VRE in clinical samples. Although researches on VRE in environmental water have been reported, they are not enough to characterize VRE pollution because each of them has collected limited number of samples. In this study, we analyzed 27 water samples collected from Korean rivers and lakes and performed Multiplex PCR to detect VRE in the water samples. From this result, it was found that multiplex PCR could be a useful method to detect VRE in environmental water.
