The observation of anti-inflammatory effect of L-carnosine(β-alanyl-L-histidine) by Horisaka et al (1947) aroused great interest in the role of this substance in tissue repair. In the rats, the progress of epithelialization, fibroblast proliferation and collagenous matrix formation was monitered by histology and histochemistry. Incontrol rats, epithelialization was competed by day 5; fibrobast proliferation by day 7; maximal collagenous matrix accumulation was observed on day 21. In L-carnosine treated group, epithelialization, fibroblast proliferarion and maximal collagenous matrix accumlation was accelerated. These observations suggest that L-carnosine has a positive, promotive effect on the wound healing process.
