한국사회의 인구 고령화가 빠른 속도로 진행되면서 노인의 빈곤 및 노인 일자리 문제에 대한 관심 역시 증가하고 있다. 공적연금의 혜택이 부족한 한국사회에서 노인 인구의 증가는 다차원적 형태의 빈곤으로 나타난다. 그로 인해 다수의 노인들이 지속적인 노동을 하고 있으며 이 중 상당수가 폐지를 수집하고 판매하게 된다. 본 연구는 이처럼 폐지를 수집하고 있는 노인들 중 여성노인들의 경험을 살펴본 연구이다. 이들의 경험과 그 의미를 살펴보기 위해 질적 연구 방법을 활용하였으며 총 5명의 노인을 대상으로 자료수집이 이루어졌다. 연구참여자들에게 폐지수집은 일차적으로 노동과 소일거리로써 나뉘었으나 행위와 인식이 혼재된 경우도 존재했다. 한편 이들이 폐지를 수집하는 근원적인 이유는 단순히 현재의 경제적 빈곤만은 아니었다. 참여자들에게 축적된 과거의 경험과 여기서 파생 된 다차원적 빈곤 및 독립적 성향, 사회적인 역할 수행이 폐지를 수집하는 원인이었다.

It seems to appear in multifaceted forms of poverty within the Korean society where the benefits from the public pension does not seem to suffice. As a result, a multitude of senior citizens continue to labor and an overwhelming majority of them collect wastepaper and sell them. This study looked at the experiences of female elderly people among the elderly who are collecting the Wastepaper. For the research, we have utilized the qualitative research methods and obtained dataset from the total of 5 elderly individuals. For the study participants, Wastepaper collection was mainly divided into labor and small jobs, but there were cases where behavior and awareness were mixed. Meanwhile, the basic reason for collecting waste paper was not just the current economic poverty. The past experience accumulated in the participants, the multi-layered poverty and independent tendencies derived from it, and the fulfillment of social roles were the reasons for Wastepaper Collection.
