21세기에 들어 새로운 최첨단 과학기술 문명의 발달로 인해 인간의 몸에 대한 위상이 급속히 흔들리고 있다. 이른바 21세기는 ‘정보혁명의 시대’, 디지털혁명의 시대’, 인공지능(AI: artificial intelligence)의 시대, 4차 산업혁명의 시대 등 다양한 명칭이 부여되면서 정보통신의 놀랄만한 산물인 사이버스페이스와 사이버스타의 출현, “인간과 기계를 합친 사이보그의 출현 및 인공지능 컴퓨터를 위시한 인지과학 등의 비약적인 발전”으로 인해 인간 신체의 위상이 흔들리고 있는 중이다. 무엇보다 4차 산업혁명은 인공지능의 발전과 밀접한 연관관계에 있다. 이를테면 인간의 변형과 함께 해서 발생한 유사 인종이 공존하는 국면을 포스트휴먼, 그리고 인간의 증강현상을 트랜스휴먼이라 일컫는다면, 4차 산업혁명은 주요 구성자인 인공지능과 합성생물학은 미래사회의 도래를 재촉한다. 사이보그 혹은 인공지능을 철학적 연구주제로 진지하게 고려하게 된 이유는 확장된 마음(extended mind)이라는 인간정신의 본성에 대한 입장 때문이다. 이러한 인공지능의 연구는 확장된 마음으로 파급되어 오면서 두 가지의 이중적 성격으로 파악할 수 있다. 첫째 인공지능은 컴퓨터의 일부로서 지능적 행동을 산출하는 기계 혹은 그것을 구동시키는 소프트웨어를 탐구하고 제작한다. 둘째, 인공지능은 인간의 마음을 과학적으로 탐구하는 인지과학(cognitive science)의 일부로서 인간 마음의 구조와 작동방식을 규명하기 위한 계산적 모델을 포함한다. 따라서 인공지능은 향후 인간의 상(像)과 기존의 인간스러움이라는 개념을 한층 변화시키게 될 것이다. 이것이 바로 미래 인문학의 모습인 것이다. 따라서 필자는 현재 인문학의 모습을 통해 인문학의 미래와 전망을 고찰해 보고자 한다.

The reason why we have seriously considered cyborg or artificial intelligence as a subject of philosophical research is because of the position on the nature of the human mind called the extended mind. This study of artificial intelligence can be grasped into two double characteristics as it is spreading in the expanded mind. First, artificial intelligence explores and produces machines that produce intelligent behaviors as part of a computer or software that drives them. Second, artificial intelligence includes a computational model for identifying the structure and functioning of the human mind as part of the cognitive science that scientifically explores the human mind. Therefore, artificial intelligence will further change the concept of human image and humanity in the future. This is what the humanities of the future will look like. Therefore, I intend to examine the future and prospects of humanities through the present state of humanities.
