이 연구는 우리나라에서 중고생 자녀를 둔 엄마들이 경험하는 사교육경감이라는 변화과정이 어떠한지를 이해하고, 어떠한 요인들의 상호작용을 통해 사교육경감 과정이 진행되며 어떠한 사교육경감 유형이 있는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 실제로 사교육경감을 경험한 참여자들 10인을 선정하였으며, 자료에 근거하여 실체이론을 도출하는 Strauss와 Corbin(1998)의 근거이론 연구방법의 절차를 활용하여 연구를 진행하였다. 연구결과, 엄마들이 경험하는 사교육경감 경험의 중심현상은 ‘기준이 분화되어 유연 해짐’이었다. 자녀교육에 대한 ‘불안과 갈등’으로 시작된 사교육 경감 과정은 교육관련 강좌와 모임 등을 ‘만남과 깨달음’ 속에서 내적인 ‘분화와 확장’, 자녀와의 ‘관계 재정립’ 단계로 진행된다. 입시장벽 앞에서 ‘흔들림과 대처’를 순환적으로 경험하지만, 조금씩 ‘안정과 도전’의 단계를 갖게 되었다. 엄마들이 경험한 사교육경감의 유형은 ‘의식변혁형’. ‘대안추구형’, ‘압박저항형’, ‘고민지속형’이었다. 이 연구는 물리적 요인 중심으로 탐색되어온 사교육경감에 대한 기존연구들의 한계를 넘어서, 사교육문제의 실질적 주체인 엄마들의 주관적이고 복합적인 경험을 심도있게 이해하였고, 사교육경감의 실제 경험을 근거로 실체이론을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

The purpose of this study is to understand the experience of Korean mothers, who have reduced private tutoring expenditure of their junior high and high school children, and to discover the process and types of reducing private tutoring expenditures. The grounded theory methodology was applied to collect and analyze data, including in-depth interviews with 10 mother-participants. The results are as follows: The core phenomenon of Korean mothers' experience of reducing private tutoring expenditures is 'standards-differentiating and becoming flexible.' The results of process analysis are: 1) the stage of 'anxiety and conflict,' 2) the stage of 'encounter and enlightenment,' 3) the stage of 'differentiation and expansion,' 4) the stage of 'reestablishment of relationship,' 5) the stage of 'wobbling and coping,' and 6) the stage of 'stability and challenge.' The mothers who reduce private tutoring expenditures are categorized into four types: 1) mothers who experienced 'change of awareness,' 2) mothers who pursued alternative ways, 3) mothers who resisted pressure, and 4) mothers who continued in their agony.
