대중음악이 학문의 영역으로 편입된 후 세계 학계에서는 다양한 종류의 대중음악에 대한 연구가 진행되어 왔지만, 동아시아 지역의 대중음악에 대한 연구는 지금껏 제대로 다루어지지 않은 영역으로 남아 있다. 그것은 대중음악 및 대중문화에 관한 연구가 영어를 모국어로 하는 영미 학계를 중심으로 이루어진 것에 큰 원인이 있지만, 그와 더불어 동아시아 대중음악이 해외 학계의 주목을 끌 만큼 해외 음악계에 널리 알려진 경우가 거의 없었기 때문이기도 하다. 그러나 케이팝의 경우 주변부, 특히 동아시아 지역의 음악으로서는 보기 드물게 해외 수용자에게 널리 알려지고 있는 음악으로 점차 학계의 주목을 받는 음악이라고 할 수 있다. 현재까지 케이팝에 대한 진지한 접근은 주로 해외의 저명한 미디어를 통해 이루어지고 있다. 이들은 케이팝이 현재의 영미대중음악이 갖지 못한 특성을 많이 가지고 있기 때문에 수용자들에게 일종의 ‘대안(代案)’으로서 다가갈 수 있다는 관점과 아울러 케이팝 산업의 규격화되고 정형화된 시스템에 주목하며 이 시스템에서 나오는 음악과 가수는 ‘예술’이라기보다는 하나의 공장 상품에 더욱 가깝다는 비판적인 관점을 아울러 제시하고 있다. 향후 케이팝 연구는 수용자와 팬덤에 관한 연구, 음악 자체에 관한 질적 연구 및 산업적 관점에서의 접근과 아울러 디지털 미디어와 케이팝 세계화의 관련성 등을 중심으로 학술적 접근이 이루어질 것으로 예상된다.

Scholars from diverse parts of the world have studied a number of music since popular music became a field of academic research. However, East Asian popular music has been a ‘forgotten area’ of the popular studies. The most important reason of this overlooking is that while East Asian popular music studies have been written by their local languages such as Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, all of which are not familiar to Anglo-American scholars whose academic interests are usually Euro-centric. Also, contrary to African and/or Latin American popular music which has attracted international scholars’ attention, East Asian popular music does not have a history of world-wide success that might be able to appeal its existence to global scholars. However, since the late 2000s, K-Pop is becoming one of the global popular music in the world, which is a unusual case for the music from the periphery. Since it is a recent phenomenon, discussions about K-Pop phenomenon has been done mostly by media rather than academia until recently. They have two different points of view. First, they consider that K-Pop can be an alternative popular music to the global audience tired of Anglo-American pop music, for K-Pop has several characteristics that differentiate it from the contemporary global (Anglo-American) pop music. And second, they note that the system of K-Pop industry is too much factory- like, therefore the result produced by the system is nothing but the industrial product rather than the meaningful culture. Therefore, the future of the K-Pop studies may concentrate on themes such as fandom, audience, qualitative research on the music itself, comparaitve research between K-Pop and Anglo-American industrial system, and the relationship between digitalization and globalization of K-Pop. Among them, digitalization will be an important keyword of international studies on K-Pop.
