The comparison of clinical characteristics according to umbilical cord blood derived endothelial progenitor cell differentiation in preeclampsia

Objective: To compare the difference in maternal characteristics and pregnancy outcomes according to differentiation potency of umbilical cord blood derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in preeclampsia (PE). Methods: Human umbilical cord blood EPCs were collected from preeclamptic pregnancies (n=25) at time of delivery. Differentiation of EPCs to outgrowth endothelial cells (OECs) was assessed by morphology, differentiation day and the number of colonies. Maternal characteristics, preeclampsia related clinical outcomes and delivery outcomes were compared according to differentiatation potency. Results: As a result of the analysis according to the differentation potency for OECs, maternal serum uric acid were significantly increased in abnormal differentation (reduced differentation potency or failed differentation) group compared to normal differentiation group (7.32 vs. 5.67mg/dL, p=0.047). There were no significant differences in maternal age, gestational age at diagnosis and delivery, blood pressure at diagnosis, presence of symptoms associated with PE, severity of PE, urine protein/creatinine ratio, birthweight, placental weight. Intrauterine fetal growth restriction tended to be more frequent in the abnormal differentation potency group than in normal differentation potency group, but was not statistically significant (66.7% vs. 25.0%, p=0.267). Conclusion: High maternal serum uric acid in PE is associated with a decrease in the differentiation capacity of fetal umbilical cord blood derived EPCs.
