Treatment of patient with foreign body granuloma developed after live bee acupuncture therapy

Live bee acupuncture therapy has been performed in Korea as an alternative therapy for chronic symptoms such as myalgia and arthralgia. This procedure is still being conducted currently, despite of the risk of opportunistic infection and multiple dermatologic reaction, so-called live bee acupuncture dermatitis. We report at a 45-year-old female patient presenting with erythematous and indurated plaque with crusts on posterior neck accompanied by pain and itching sensation. Her symptoms included nausea, heating sensation occurred 3 days ago and was getting worse. The patient reported that she had been treated with live bee acupuncture (Bong-Chim) therapy for 8 months as folk remedy. An excision biopsy was performed at the posterior neck. Based on his clinical features and histologic examination, she was diagnosed with foreign body granuloma due to live bee acupuncture therapy and improved by intralesional injection of triamcinolone acetonide. Patients regard symptoms caused by live bee acupuncture dermatitis as a Myeong-Hyun phenomenon. Therefore, there are not a few cases of foreign body granuloma caused by treatment with live bee acupucture for a long time. We report a case of granuloma in which clinical features are interesting and review Korean literature in order to reconsider the perception of acupuncture treatment.
